Putting the Bible First in a World Full of Distractions
We’ve all been there. You wake up, and the first thing you do is grab your phone. You scroll through social media, check the news, see what everyone’s posting, and before you know it, your mind is already entangled in the world’s noise. It’s almost like you’ve already stepped into the rhythm of the world before your feet even hit the ground.
But what if we flipped that script? What if, instead of starting our day with the world, we started with the Word?
In John 1, we read that “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” (John 1:1) This Word—Jesus—wasn’t just part of the creation process; He was the Creator. Before the world even existed, He was already there. Think about that: before anything else, there was the Word.
So, why does this matter for us today?
Word Comes Before Everything Else
When you start your day with the Bible, you’re not just reading words on a page. You’re connecting with Jesus Himself. He speaks life into us. But if we’re always reaching for our phones first, we’re letting the world speak to us before we hear what God has to say.
Imagine trying to build a house without blueprints. Don't you think that would be extremely chaotic? That’s what life can feel like when we start with the noise of the world instead of the clarity and wisdom found in God’s Word.
The World Isn’t Going to Satisfy You
Let’s be real: we live in a world that’s always pushing for our attention. Social media, news updates, endless notifications—these things will always be there, waiting for us to dive in. But have you noticed how quickly they leave you feeling empty or anxious? The world gives us constant noise, but it rarely gives us peace.
In Matthew 4:4, Jesus reminds us: “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.” The world can’t fill the hunger in our hearts like God’s Word can. Only His truth brings real nourishment.
The Word Is Your Foundation
When you start your day with the Bible, you’re setting yourself up for a different kind of foundation. Sure, the world wants you to think that success, fame, or popularity are what matter most, but God’s Word gives us a whole different perspective. It reminds us of who we really are—loved, chosen, and called for a purpose.
When we spend time in the Word first thing, it reorients our hearts. Instead of letting the world dictate how we feel or what we think about ourselves, we’re reminded of our identity in Christ. And that, my friend, is something that can’t be shaken by whatever happens throughout the day.
The Word Is Unchanging
Everything in this world is constantly changing. Trends come and go, opinions shift, and the news cycle never stops spinning. But the Word of God is unshakable. Hebrews 13:8 says, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”
When we make the Bible our first priority, we’re anchoring ourselves to something that won’t change. No matter how chaotic the world gets, the promises of God remain true. The Word is the constant we need in a world that’s always moving.
A Simple Practice for Your Day
It doesn’t have to be complicated. You don’t need to read the whole Bible every morning, but start somewhere. Try reading a chapter, a verse, or even just a few lines that resonate with you. And don’t just read it—reflect on it. Let it settle into your heart.
Maybe you set an alarm on your phone to remind you to open your Bible before scrolling. Or you could try reading a Bible app before checking social media. Find what works for you, but make it a habit to get in the Word first.
Choosing the Word Over the World
Here’s the challenge: next time you wake up, choose the Word over the world. Let the first thing you engage with be God’s truth, not the noise around you. Your heart will thank you for it.
When you put the Word before the world, you’re setting yourself up for peace, purpose, and a life that’s rooted in something unshakable. And trust me, that’s way better than whatever’s trending on social media.
Choose what endures.
